Mohair is a natural fibre, so if kept clean and properly fitted it will not sore or rub your horse. It is also very breathable and has moisture wicking qualities, so your horse will not be overly sweaty or sweaty at all under your mohair tack, which is ideal for long hot days in the saddle.
Rodents, moths, and dogs have been known to chew on mohair and break through the cord. This greatly reduces the usable life of your mohair tack, so be sure to store it away from these critters to ensure the integrity of the item.
Short answer - no, 100% mohair does not stretch. 100% mohair has a little bit of "give", which is great in cinches as your horse can still expand their ribcage, but it will not stretch like cotton would.
If you have a product that was advertised as mohair that has stretched, it is likely because it was blended with another fibre such as cotton, polyester, or bamboo – all fibres which stretch.
Rockin' A Mohair uses only 100% mohair and 100% alpaca, both of which do not stretch.
Yes - all Rockin' A Mohair products are made with either 100% mohair or 100% alpaca materials. They will be listed with which material they are made out of.
Almost nothing! They share all of the same pros and cons, so be sure to check out those other FAQs.
Alpaca only comes in natural colours, none of the fibres are dyed, so there is less selection on colour when it comes to using alpaca cord.
First, remove all leather from the product if you are able to do so easily.
Fill a bucket or sink with cool water. You can add natural/biodegradable soap, or horse shampoo if you feel like your tack is extra dirty. Let soak for a few minutes, then gently work the dirt and sweat out. Do not excessively pick hair our of your tack, as the horsehair works to felt the mohair together and actually increases the integrity of your product. Only pick out hair that comes out easily, the rest can be left in.
Rinse out your tack until the water runs clear, or until there is no soap left.
Hang to dry, out of direct sunlight.
Clean and condition your leather as usual, being careful not to get any oil or leather soap on the mohair.
Let dry, reassemble, and you are ready to ride!
*Please be aware that mohair does draw up and get tight when wet soaked. This can, in some cases, cause your mohair tack to warp. Rest assured, as soon as it is dry it will be back to normal.
Do not use bleaches or chemicals. Do not put in washer or dryer. Do not let dry in direct sunlight.
